Stories with Custom Reading Level +Quizzes

Newsela is a great free website that provides the news at multiple reading levels, organized by subject (science, kids, etc.) with quizzes. You can also assign stories to your clients. It's designed for schools so they have Teacher, Student and Parent accounts. You need a school email address for a Teacher account, but anyone can create a free Parent account, and then your clients will be "students".

  1. You can create a free Parent account.  Learn more with the quickstart guide for parents.
  2. Create a Student account for one or all of your clients. (Student accounts have Quizzes)

Here’s  a sample of an  article from Scientific American at the highest reading level:

With the help of a NASA Mars orbiter, scientists have identified deposits of an exotic material known as “impact glass” on Mars. On Earth this same material has been shown to preserve evidence of ancient life, so impact glass on Mars could provide key insights into the past habitability — or even past inhabitants — of the Red Planet. Kevin Cannon and John Mustard, of Brown University, reported the glass discovery on June 5 in Geology.

And the same article at Grade level 3:

Scientists have found an unusual material on Mars. It is called “impact glass.” The discovery is important. Impact glass could help show us if anything can live on Mars. It could also reveal if anything has ever lived on the planet.

Signs of impact glass were discovered by Kevin Cannon and John Mustard. Cannon is a student at Brown University. Mustard is a professor at Brown. They found the impact glass with help of a NASA Mars spacecraft.
