Get your survivor working independently in 5 easy steps.

Quickly help your survivor work more independently with speech therapy programs.

The goal is to get the survivor using at least some of the programs independently. Slowly ease them into the programs so that they never feel overwhelmed. Move to the next step only when ready—it's better to go slowly than too quickly.

  1. Learn how to use it on your own.
Find something that you think would be a good starting point for your survivor.

  2. Let your survivor watch you
They can answer the exercises while you run the program.
Let them know they can take over whenever they like.

  3. They use it while you watch.
    1. Resist the urge to help unless they ask.
Everything they accomplish on their own will build their confidence.
    2. Let them know that they can give you a signal if they want help.
Agree on a non-verbal signal for help: maybe they tug your shirt, or point at the screen. You can patiently wait for their signal.
    3. Find something they can do on their own. Working independently will increase their confidence and motivation.
  4. Survivor uses it independently, with you nearby if they get stuck.
  5. Survivor uses it independently while you take a nap.
